Corus Entertainment
For Corus Entertainment, it’s what the network team couldn’t see that was keeping them up at night. One of Canada’s most successful integrated media and entertainment companies, Corus has gone through a series of amalgamations and acquisitions over the past 10 years. It now has a rich portfolio of television services, radio stations and animated programming assets that travel over a global network.
As a result of all this acquisition activity, Corus ended up with a collection of different networks managed by different divisions. In order to streamline network management and improve overall performance, it decided to bring together more than 20 of its remote locations under a single cohesive network to be managed through its central offices in Toronto. A critical tool in its network support portfolio is the OptiView Series III Integrated Network Analyzer.

Credit Union
A large credit union has 17 branch offices spread throughout the county where it’s located and it’s expanding to 25 branch offices in the near future. The institution's point-to-point network was upgraded to an MPLS network in order to improve performance. But after the new network was installed, network performance at the branches was still slow. The credit union looked for a way to improve network performance and provide benefits to both the business and customers alike.
Our featured case study shows how the credit union was able to solve problems and achieve business goals using the OptiView™ Integrated Network Analyzer. “The OptiView analyzer is an ideal, centralized solution for monitoring and analyzing our network. We connect it directly to the span port of our core router and it constantly tracks network performance,” said the vice president of network and telecommunications service.

Fort Wayne Cardiology
As a busy and growing healthcare provider, Fort Wayne Cardiology relies heavily on technology … and on its IT department to keep that technology and the network behind it running smoothly. Yet network performance hadn’t kept up with Fort Wayne Cardiology’s growth. Something had to be done to figure out and fix the problems, to get – and keep – the network healthy.
With the OptiView Series III Integrated Network Analyzer, the IT staff at Fort Wayne Cardiology are able to monitor traffic, diagnose problems, spot rogue access points, and optimize network speed and performance. The tool would have paid for itself in time and labor costs within a year, but in fact the investment saved the clinic more than double the cost of the OptiView by eliminating the expense of a third-party analysis check. Fort Wayne Cardiology also reduced the time spent on network issues by 5.25 hours of IT staff time per week. That’s over 262 hours per year that can be committed to other IT initiatives.

Home Federal Bank
Suppose someone blindfolded you and then told you to drive safely down a busy street, stopping at all the red lights and making sure not to hit anyone? While that might seem like a preposterous suggestion, it's not all that different from the problem faced by CIOs and network administrators who don't have good visibility into their networks. They're expected to avoid crashes and keep the network running smoothly, but they have no way to see in real time what is happening within the network infrastructure. This was the situation in which Charles Pettey, CIO of Middlesboro, Kentucky-based Home Federal Bank, found himself when he joined the bank's IT department.

Madrid airport, Spain
The Airport of Madrid-Barajas was inaugurated in 1931 and is being managed by Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA). About 45.8 million passengers used the airport in 2006 which makes de the Madrid- Barajas airport fifth in Europe and 13th in the world. The airport consists of four terminals plus one satellite terminal. The total area of the terminals spans over 1.3 million square meters (in addition to 36 km2 of external area), which makes this airport the largest in the world in terms of terminal area. The airport has a multiservice network which provides LAN connectivity to the companies operating in the airport. In this sense, AENA functions like a communications service provider, offering its services to their customers which include airways companies, car rental companies, etc.. Each customer gets the corresponding network drops assigned which are managed in a dedicated VLAN and which can span the whole airport campus. The implementation and management of this multiservice network is a responsibility of “Division de TIC”, the division in charge of the airport’s information technology and communications. “The airport works continuously – for this great machine to work without disruption it is necessary that everything works correctly. When an incident occurs we have to diagnose it and solve it as fast as possible.

Portsmouth University
The Portsmouth University Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering has its own computer network, which is an autonomous network group, centrally managed by the Department. The network consists of a total of about 200 Desktop Workstations running Linux and Windows. All the routing is through the several owned subnets of the network and is performed by Cisco® and NETGEAR® routers and switches.
The Department runs its own servers for anything the network needs (DNS, DHCP, Kerberos, NIS etc). It is a multiplatform transparent network and all computers can be accessed remotely for greater flexibility and use from home, with great care given to security, with sophisticated Firewalls and VPNs in place.
Frank Margrave, Principal Lecturer Electronic & Computer Engineering comments “We have 800 users in the departments so the network is quite substantial. This set up allows our students to do hands on work on a live network. We test, configure, fault find, manage and monitor. A live network means we need to have the tools to monitor it in real time.”
